Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was a little girl. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed throughout the day for the love of literature, art, and theater. DuVernay quickly became enthralled after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught her to say something through art. Although DuVernay grew up within Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. As a result of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college. From this position she started her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and promotions, like the Urban Beauty Collective.
